Michael Kurth‘s 2017 String Quartet No. 2, “Some of a Sudden,” got some nationwide radio airtime on yesterday’s Performance Today with host Fred Childs. Kurth is an Atlanta-based composer and contrabassist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
Although the show’s radio broadcast was yesterday, the episode can still be heard on line through the Performance Today website. Kurth’s segment begins at 20:45 of Hour 2, the third item in the lineup.
“The whole show is filled with great stuff that i’m honored to share the bill with,” wrote Kurth on his Facebook page, adding with his well-known penchant for creative wordplay: “Thrilling to hear your own stuff broadcastified and interwebbed.”
The audio comes from a January 24 performance by members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra: violinists Justin Bruns and Anastasia Agapova, violist Paul Murphy and cellist Joel Dallow, as part of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s occasional pre-concert recital series at Atlanta Symphony Hall.
The same four ASO musicians premiered the Quartet in a March 2017 concert by the Riverside Chamber Players, which commissioned the piece and for which Dallow is artistic director. Kurth is also the group’s composer-in-residence.
Riverside Chamber Players recorded and released a complete CD of string quartet music by Kurth back in 2013. A CD of his symphonic compositions has been recorded by Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, with an anticipated release date in March. ■
