On Thursday, The Atlanta Opera announced that it has added a 10th performance of its acclaimed production of Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci to its Big Tent Series, to take place on Sunday, November 15 at 7:30pm. The company cites the addition as being in response to demand for tickets to the live, in-person performances. The company’s “Crossroads” concert, originally scheduled for that date and time, has been moved up to 2:00pm on that same day as a matinee offering.
Pagliacci has played to sold out audiences since opening on October 22, but not without intervention of Mother Nature. Necessarily performed outdoors in the company’s new Big Tent venue due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a single performance on October 24 was rained out. The October 28 performance took place only hours before Tropical Storm Zeta slammed into Atlanta, with a significant 15-minute interruption midway through — a sound system crash caused by the incoming weather system, but the show went on after it was restored.
The following night’s performance of Viktor Ullmann’s The Kaiser of Atlantis was canceled after overnight damage to the venue caused by Zeta was assessed. Recovery was quickly set in motion by The Atlanta Opera and its crews, and the venue was performance ready by the next night’s Pagliacci. Damage included some holes in the Big Tent, while a companion tent for the orchestra was lifted off its moorings and blown across the field. See the video below of for that story.
