Atlanta, GA— The Georgian Chamber Players (violinist David Coucheron, violist Zhenwei Shi, and pianists Elizabeth Pridgen and Julie Coucheron) have announced their 2023-24 season of concerts.
Formed in 1984 by principal players of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the ensemble presents chamber music masterpieces, often joined by colleagues — oboist Zach Boeding and cellist Charae Kreuger are the guest artists this season.
In a recent interview with Georgia Public Broadcasting’s Sarah Zaslaw, Julie Coucheron, who acts as artistic director of the Georgian Chamber Players, spoke about how the group selects their repertoire:
“We try to do that together as a team,” says Coucheron in the interview. “Since we only have about three or four concerts a year, it’s important that everybody gets to play something that they want to do. We usually have a meeting or an email chain about what people want to play, and then I try to make a program out of that.” (GPB.org, Sept. 6, 2023)
Coucheron remarked further on some of those choices in a subsequent email to EarRelevant. The November 15 season opening concert at Eddie’s Attic, she says, is designed to appeal “to any music lover, whether you are an avid chamber music concertgoer or if this is your very first chamber music concert.” And of GCP’s February collaboration with the Atlanta History Center for Black History Month, she remarks: “Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s compositions were influenced by African folk music, so to pair them with Grieg, Brahms, and Dvořák, who were also inspired by traditional folk music, will create an exciting musical journey.”
GCP has plannedt four concerts in all for 2023/24. Here’s their complete season schedule:
