NEWPORT, Rhode Island— Newport Classical has named arts administrator Oliver Inteeworn as its next executive director, effective January 5, 2026, the organization announced Wednesday.
Inteeworn succeeds Gillian Fox, who served as executive director from 2020 to 2025. Eric Gershman will continue as interim executive director through December 31.
Inteeworn brings approximately 25 years of experience in nonprofit performing arts management. He most recently served as executive director of the American Symphony Orchestra in New York City, a position he held from 2018 to 2025. During his tenure, the orchestra expanded its free performance schedule across New York and launched ASO Online, a digital platform offering streamed concerts and related programming.
Before becoming executive director, Inteeworn served for more than a decade as the American Symphony Orchestra’s general manager. He was also the founding managing director of The Orchestra Now at Bard College and previously held artistic planning and production positions at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Inteeworn holds a diploma in music education from the University of Music Saarbrücken in Germany and a master’s degree in arts administration from Columbia University.
Suzanna Laramee, president of Newport Classical’s board, said Inteeworn was selected following an international search. Board vice president Stephen Huttler said the search attracted applicants from around the world.
In a statement, Inteeworn said he was drawn to Newport Classical’s artistic reputation and organizational direction. He is expected to lead the implementation of the organization’s 2025–2028 strategic plan, which focuses on expanding national visibility, increasing local engagement, developing new revenue sources, and maintaining organizational stability.
Founded in 1969 as the Rhode Island Arts Foundation at Newport, Newport Classical presents year-round classical music programming across Aquidneck Island. The organization is best known for its summer music festival held in Newport’s historic mansions, as well as chamber music performances, free community concerts, and education initiatives serving local schools and community organizations.
