ATLANTA, Georgia— The Atlanta Opera Film Studio will release 18 cinematic opera productions this fall, offering subscribers access to a wide range of classic and contemporary works through its streaming platform, the company announced Tuesday.
The new films, edited from live performances with additional stage and studio footage, will be available beginning September 25 through the Film Studio’s subscription service, which costs $25 annually or $7 per month. The productions feature multichannel sound mastering and multiple camera angles designed to capture both the drama of the stage and the nuance of the performers’ acting.
The lineup includes staples such as Madama Butterfly, Don Giovanni, The Barber of Seville, La bohème, and the first three operas of Wagner’s Ring Cycle — Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, and Siegfried. Contemporary works such as As One, Forsyth County is Flooding, and Steele Roots are also part of the release, reflecting the company’s commitment to new and diverse voices.
Tomer Zvulun, the company’s general and artistic director and founder of the Film Studio, said the initiative is designed to broaden access to opera and showcase the art form’s dramatic possibilities on screen.
“With this major release of feature films of opera, we demonstrate our commitment to innovation, to breaking boundaries, and underscoring the power of this vibrant art form,” Zvulun said in a statement.
The releases will roll out in monthly batches through December:
- September 25: Madama Butterfly, Don Giovanni, Bluebeard’s Castle, As One, The Barber of Seville
- October 23: Candide, The Anonymous Lover, Forsyth County is Flooding, Steele Roots, The Magic Flute
- November 20: Macbeth, Rigoletto, La Bohème, La Bohème at Pullman Yards, Semele
- December 18: Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried
The Atlanta Opera Film Studio was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to keep performances accessible when theaters were closed. Since then, it has become a central part of the company’s identity, expanding its audience beyond metro Atlanta and reaching viewers worldwide. The Film Studio now functions as both a performance archive and a creative laboratory, allowing productions to be reimagined for the screen with cinematic staging and lighting.
In addition to the subscription-only films, the Film Studio will offer four major productions as free livestreams over the next season: La Traviata on November 14, The Marriage of Figaro on March 20, Turandot on May 1, and Wagner’s Götterdämmerung on June 5. Each livestream will remain available on demand for a limited time before being replaced by the edited cinematic version.
Film Studio sirector Felipe Barral said the productions are designed to give audiences a more intimate perspective than a traditional theater experience.
“They give opera lovers a chance to see the performers as fine actors in addition to great singers,” Barral said.
Beyond the full-length productions, subscribers have access to an expanding digital library that includes past seasons’ shows, bonus behind-the-scenes footage, and exclusive interviews with artists. Free users can still watch video shorts, rehearsal footage, and podcasts that introduce new audiences to opera and explain the artistic choices behind each production.
