➤ Arthur Fagen to conduct at Teatro Lirico Di Cagliari, Italy

ATLANTA, GA— After conducting a highly successful Un ballo in maschera there several years ago, Arthur Fagen, music director of The Atlanta Opera, returns to the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari (Italy) on August 6 and 7 to conduct a program of 20th century Anglo-American music. The program includes Gustav Holst’s A Choral Fantasia op. 51, George Gershwin’s Cuban Overture and Frederick Delius’ Appalachia Variations on an old slave song.

Then on August 13 & 15, Mr. Fagen will conduct the Latin Grammy-winning Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Costa Rica at the Centro Nacional de Musica in San José, Costa Rica. That program will include Wagner’s Prélude to Act 3 of Lohengrin and César Franck’s Symphony in D minor. ■


➤ Peter J. Stelling passes away at age 78

ATLANTA, GA— Mr. Peter J. Stelling passed away on Sunday, July 25, 2021 at the age of 78. A lifelong Atlantan, Stelling had a passion for classical music and was an ardent supporter of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Opera. He was a board member of the Georgia Opera, a precursor of the present Atlanta Opera, serving one term as its president. He also served as road manager for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra during the early years of Robert Shaw’s tenure as music director.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Monday, August 9th at 11am. Complete obituaries can be found online in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and on Legacy.com. ■

➤ The Atlanta Opera releases new video, Morris Robinson & Friends: A Concert for Unity

ATLANTA, GA— The Atlanta Opera has announced the release of its Concert for Unity video for free viewing on its Spotlight Media platform. Created and lead by Atlanta native and renowned bass Morris Robinson, and featuring noted Black opera singers Ronnita Miller, Jasmine Habersham and Joshua Conyers, the Concert for Unity is a special celebration that includes selections from spirituals, gospel, rock, opera, with accompaniment by pianist Damien Sneed and spoken word by actor Enoch King. The concert was presented live twice, on May 8 and 9, 2021, by The Atlanta Opera in collaboration with Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company and the City of South Fulton Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. Runtime is 60 minutes. Watch online here.  ■
