HOUSTON, Texas— John Mangum, Executive Director and CEO of the Houston Symphony, is departing after six years to become the General Director, President, and CEO of Lyric Opera of Chicago starting this fall.

Established in 1954, the Lyric Opera is a leading opera company known for its high-caliber productions in Chicago’s historic 3,563-seat Lyric Opera House (formerly known as the Civic Opera House).

During Mangum’s tenure with the Houston Symphony, the organization saw significant milestones, including completing major renovations to Jones Hall, the appointment of Music Director Juraj Valcuha, and substantial financial growth. Under his leadership, the Symphony successfully navigated challenges posed by Hurricane Harvey and the COVID-19 pandemic, including safely resuming live performances and expanding its endowment by 50 percent.

Mangum’s initiatives also included a major capital campaign for the Jones Hall renovation, and enhancements in the Houston Symphony’s education and community programs.

The Houston Symphony has launched a search for a new Executive Director, with an interim CEO expected to be named soon.
