DETROIT, Michigan— The Sphinx Organization has unveiled the key events and initiatives for its 2024-2025 season, emphasizing its ongoing commitment to fostering diversity and excellence in classical music.
Among the season’s highlights is the announcement of the 2025 Sphinx Medals of Excellence, awarded to soprano Gabriella Reyes, pianist Clayton Stephenson, and violinist/composer Curtis Stewart. Each recipient will receive a $50,000 career grant in recognition of their contributions to classical music and their efforts to address systemic challenges in Black and Latino communities.
The season will also feature the Sphinx Virtuosi’s national tour, which includes a return to Carnegie Hall in October 2024. Curtis Stewart, a four-time Grammy-nominated artist, will serve as the Composer-in-Residence for the tour. The program, entitled “American Form/s,” will showcase a blend of classical music infused with elements of soul, bluegrass, jazz, and more, with the world premiere of Stewart’s Drill as a focal point.
The 28th annual Sphinx Competition and SphinxConnect: Ignite! will take place in Detroit from January 22-25, 2025. The competition provides a platform for young string musicians, offering them opportunities to perform with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra and compete for over $100,000 in prizes. SphinxConnect, the largest global convening dedicated to diversity in classical music, will feature sessions and keynote addresses by prominent figures in the industry, including Grammy-winning composer Jessie Montgomery and poet Kwame Alexander.
Founded in 1996, the Sphinx Organization continues to be a leading force in addressing the under-representation of Black and Latino artists in classical music. ■
