ATLANTA, Georgia— Atlanta contemporary music group ensemble vim will open its eighth season Oct. 12 with the Atlanta premiere of Raven Chacon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Voiceless Mass, beginning a 2026-27 season that will combine contemporary chamber music with dance, visual art and community engagement.
The season will include four principal concert programs, along with activities connected to the ensemble’s spark2 interdisciplinary initiative. As in previous seasons, the ensemble says its events will remain free and open to the public, with RSVP required or requested for some events.
The Oct. 12 opening at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church will bring together Chacon’s Voiceless Mass, which won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Music, with performances by Stuart Gerber and Jan Berry Baker of Bent Frequency and organist Matthew Michael Brown, music director at St. Luke’s, according to the season announcement.
The program also will feature music by Viet Cuong, Marc Mellits, David Heyes and Atlanta composer Emily Koh.
The season’s interdisciplinary focus will continue with spark2, the second cycle of vim’s collaborative arts initiative. The project brings together composer and movement-artist teams to create new works combining music and movement.
Vim also plans a November community event at McClatchey Park with FyreNation Dance Crew, one of the spark2 collaborators. The family-oriented event will combine new music with hip-hop dance.
The spark2 showcase is scheduled for Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. Sparkweek is scheduled to begin Feb. 6, with the showcase concluding the cycle’s public activities. Tickets are free, with space limited and RSVP requested.
Vim’s annual Women’s History Month concert, Ode to Mother Earth, will take place March 23 at MOCA GA. The program will feature internationally acclaimed soprano Marnie Breckenridge and music by Judith Weir, Jocelyn Morlock, Augusta Read Thomas, Missy Mazzoli, Mara Gibson and Luna Pearl Woolf.
The program will examine ideas of womanhood and femininity in relation to the natural world, according to the ensemble.
The season will conclude May 4 with the first installment of Music X Art, a new series created in partnership with MOCA GA that will place music alongside an ongoing museum exhibition.
The inaugural edition will explore the work of Georgia artist Michael Ellison alongside music by notable Black composers whose works share stylistic elements with Ellison’s art. The format will encourage listeners to move through the gallery during the performance and encounter the visual and musical works together.
All four principal Season VIII concerts are scheduled to be free. The ensemble is also seeking donations and sponsorships to support its programming and community outreach.
