ATLANTA, Georgia— The Guthman Musical Instrument Competition has opened its call for submissions for the 2025 edition, inviting musical inventors globally to showcase their innovative instruments.
Set to take place March 7 and 8, 2025, on the campus of Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, the event aims to highlight and advance the future of music through groundbreaking instrument design.
Musical inventors have until October 1, 2024, to submit their creations for a chance to be among the approximately ten finalists who will present their instruments in person. These finalists will demonstrate their work to a panel of international music technology experts and perform in a public concert, competing for a share of $10,000 in prizes. To assist with travel expenses, finalists will receive an honorarium, with $500 for those within North America and $1,000 for international participants.
The competition is unique in its focus on identifying and promoting new musical instruments that blend technology with traditional performance arts, which could revolutionize music creation and the future of musical expression.
This year’s judging panel includes a trio of notable figures: King Britt, a globally recognized producer and composer in electronic music; Paul McCabe, Senior Vice President of Research and Innovation at Roland Future Design Labs; and Laetitia Sonami, a sound artist known for her inventive instruments like the lady’s glove and Spring Spyre.
A platform for inventors and a nexus for music technologists, The Guthman Musical Instrument Competition continues to be a beacon for those at the intersection of music and technology, promising to unveil instruments that could redefine musical performance and experience.
