Andrew Brady to perform King Day recital

Atlanta GA—  Former ASO principal bassoonist Andrew Brady returns to Atlanta to perform a recital of music by BIPOC composers this Sunday, January 16, at 3:00 pm, at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The concert, entitled “Trials to Triumph,” is co-sponsored by Concerts@First and Challenge the Stats, whose mission is to empower BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) artists and use music as a tool for social justice both inside and outside of the concert hall.

Now principal bassoon for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in St. Paul, Minnesota, Brady will open his program by performing a commissioned piece based on the words of his grandmother, an amateur poet whose message of acceptance resonated with him. Brady commissioned Stefan L. Smith to compose the music for “My Young Friend” because of their similar upbringing as young gay men growing up in Southern black churches.

The program will also include “Elegy for Innocence” by Jeffrey Scott, “Trouble Don’t Last” by jazz drummer Mark Lomax, and Leslie Adams’ “Poem of Love.”

First quoted by writer Jon Ross in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Brady has described his program as “going much deeper than presenting Black composers” and offering “a very personal celebration and journey and reflection on my life experiences.”

The recital is free, but RSVPs are requested, which can be made through the Concerts@First website.

The program’s name honors Anne Parsons, a former president and CEO of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and transformative leader in the orchestral community, who passed away in 2022.

The inaugural year, June 2023 to June 2024, will support six promising orchestra professionals, helping to build their leadership skills, mindsets, and networks and providing individual and group mentorship opportunities with some of our field’s highly regarded leaders in the performing arts. Participants will also receive complimentary registration for the LAO’s 2023 Conference, a transportation stipend, and League membership for one year.
