ATLANTA, Georgia— The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) welcomes six new musicians and one Conducting Fellow for its 2024-25 season, which begins this Thursday.
The incoming musicians for the orchestra’s 80th anniversary season include Lauren Roth as Assistant Concertmaster, Cameron Bonner as Principal Bassoon, Andrew Burhans as Associate Principal Horn, Ivan Valbuena as Associate Principal Clarinet and E-flat Clarinet, and Paolo Dara and Paul Halberstadt in the second violin section. In addition, Finan Jones joins the orchestra as Conducting Fellow, and James Nelson as Assistant Librarian.
“We are delighted to welcome these new musicians to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra family,” said ASO Executive Director Jenifer Barlament. “They are among the best and brightest in the world.”
Lauren Roth, the new Assistant Concertmaster, previously served as Concertmaster of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and taught at the University of Arizona. She has performed as a soloist and guest concertmaster with major orchestras and festivals worldwide.
Cameron Bonner, incoming Principal Bassoon, comes from the Alabama Symphony, where he was Assistant Principal. He has performed with several prestigious orchestras, including the Toronto and Houston Symphonies, and studied at Carnegie Mellon University.
Andrew Burhans, appointed as Associate Principal Horn, is a graduate of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. He has performed with the Houston Symphony and participated in numerous music festivals, including Spoleto Festival USA.
Dr. Ivan Valbuena joins the ASO as Associate Principal Clarinet and E-flat Clarinet. He has had an international career, performing with the San Antonio Philharmonic and the New Mexico Philharmonic, as well as guest appearances with multiple U.S. and international orchestras.
Violinists Paolo Dara and Paul Halberstadt bring extensive experience to the second violin section. Dara previously served as Principal Viola of the Grand Rapids Symphony, while Halberstadt was Associate Concertmaster of the Alabama Symphony and has performed with prominent U.S. orchestras.
Finan Jones, the ASO’s new Conducting Fellow, has previously worked with ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. He is noted for his versatility and collaborative approach to conducting.
James Nelson, who became the ASO’s new Assistant Librarian in August, previously served as a library fellow with the New World Symphony and worked in the libraries of the National Symphony Orchestra, Santa Fe Opera, and San Francisco Opera. He holds degrees in Viola Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Boston Conservatory. ■
